about

On July 31, 2011 we packed the bill at the Yacht Club with all of our different musical projects as a farewell party for our bass player, Justin Mann and the album release of Collectible Boys' "Sense of Redemption". The Synthaholics played some 80's tunes on synthesizers, The White Tornado knocked the place over, and the Caribbean sounds of Jumbies even made a surprise appearance. Tommy Ronan got it all down on the boards, and after mixing down the tracks it seemed to capture a sense of fun, sleeplessness, unpredictability, and camaraderie that was worth sharing. With that in mind, here is The White Tornado's set in its full destructive glory.

"Dean Mewhorter was born in 1934 in Eau Claire and spent his life in Wisconsin. Trained as a teacher, Dean served as principal at elementary schools in Wisconsin for many years. Dean played and sang from the age of four. He would often play the guitar and sing with the children at his schools in the Milwaukee area. Upon retirement from education, he began driving motor coach tours around the United States and always took his guitar along. He would sing and play every evening after dinner to the passengers on his tour bus. He bought a keyboard in 1990 and from then until 2010 played as "The White Tornado" at nursing homes, hospitals, state and county fairs, dairy days, pig roasts and senior dances.

Dean got the name White Tornado when he was dancing. Dean always wore white shoes, white pants, and a white shirt with his black vest. He asked Rachel Herman to dance and the dance floor was packed. He saw a hole between the dancers on the floor and swept Rachel through, twirling her as they went. When the dance ended she looked at him and said, 'You dance just like a White Tornado,' and the name stuck."

The White Tornado Davenport, Iowa

Combine a bluesy, coffee-drinking piano roller and a straightedge synthesizer geek with a Doctor Who penchant and you get the White Tornado - a mean power-piano-trio-backed songwriter who writes songs about life, love, science, and robots.
